However, pulling hair against its growth can cause breakage of the hair follicle mid-shaft, leading to uneven regrowth and potential ingrown hairs. Additionally, this process can be painful and irritate the skin.

Sugar can extract very short hairs
- Our Estheticians at KLS Aesthetics in Renton, WA, use the professional body sugar technique to extract only 1/16th to 1/8th-inch-long hairs. This means hair is more likely to be removed in the Anagen (active) stage, which can lead to more permanent hair reduction.
- Removing shorter hair also leads to higher client satisfaction and long-lasting results. There is little to no regrowth for the first couple of weeks.
- Clients can come in more often for their services (especially in the summer) without needing to shave in between.
Sugar will break fewer hairs
- As the sugar molds onto the skin against the natural hair growth, it seeps into the follicle to help grasp the hair shaft and bulb and facilitate hair removal.
- This extra leverage allows you to remove shorter and more stubborn hairs
- Because hair is removed in the natural direction of growth without stretching the hair backward and possibly breaking it, it removes the hair and root bulb intact.
Sugar paste is water-soluble
- Clean-up is quick and easy. A warm, moist towel easily removes sugar residue from your client and equipment, with no chance of damage to clothes or lines.
- Your client leaves with no sticky residue to scrub off later at home.
- Your sugar warmer and equipment is always clean when you can wash it off with warm water
Sugar never dries
- Wax must be removed immediately, or it can dry on the skin
- Sugar will not dry; it can help results by leaving it on the skin to penetrate the follicle of the shortest hair.
- You can also use the same sugar paste to sugar more than one body area by taking out enough for the larger area, “parking it” on the body, and then sugaring the smaller area first. The sugar will sit on the body until you pick it back up
Sugar is NOT hot
- Sugar is applied at almost body temperature and quickly cools or heats to each client’s body temperature. Because of this, your client will be less uncomfortable, and there is no chance of burning them.
- Sugar is not hot, so it does not contribute to the microcirculation caused by a heated wax.
- Because of the lack of heat and microcirculation, you can sugar diabetics
- For sensitive clients, less heat helps reduce redness, and swelling can occur.
Sugar is not tested on animal
Sugar of the Nile paste and products are NEVER tested on animals
Contraindications
- Clients using Retina-A, Glycolics, Chemical Peels, and/or strong antibiotics should discontinue use for 5 to 7 days before sugaring treatment. A patch test can then be done to establish if it’s safe to sugar. Those with severely compromised skin may need to wait up to 28 days.
- Anyone using Accutane must discount use for at least 28 days, after which a patch test may be done to establish the safety of sugaring them.
- Clients who are pregnant may need to get a doctor’s OK before a sugaring treatment. As your client’s pregnancy progresses, the treatments will get more painful, and there will be more chance of bruising the tissue.
- Anyone with a fungus or bacterial infection must not be treated. These are highly contagious conditions.
- Blood thinners
- Sunburn
Who CAN you sugar?
- Diabetics can safely be sugared because the sugar is not hot. The heat of wax is contraindicated for diabetics. Pregnant or breastfeeding women can also get sugared at any point in their trimester. However, the skin will be much more sensitive towards the end of the pregnancy.
- Because sugar does not stick to live skin tissue, it is gentle enough to sugar the following delicate areas: (patch test if unsure)
- Varicose Veins (as long as they aren’t painful to begin with)
- Dry Psoriasis and Eczema
- Sensitive Skin
- Radiation Dermatitis

Pre Treatment
- Clients should come in with as clean of skin as possible
- Brazilian clients should utilize facilities before cleansing the area to be sugared
- No working out, sunbathing, or tanning on the day of treatment
- Sweat harbors bacteria, so it is best if they haven’t gotten all sweaty and warm
- No spray tanning or lotion on the day of treatment
- The sugar will remove the products on the skin and will be less efficient at removing the hair. Very emollient lotions will impede the sugar
Post Treatment
- After sugaring treatment, clients should allow the skin to rest for at least 24 hours. The client should follow the suggested list:
- No submersion in water, i.e., hot tub, swimming pool, lake, bathtub, showers are ok
- No sweating: no heavy working out or being in a hot environment where they would be sweating heavily
- Sweat harbors bacteria, and we don’t want bacteria in freshly sugared areas
- Excess heat can cause itchiness and possibly hives
- No sun exposure
- Skin is freshly exfoliated, and new skin shouldn’t be exposed to UV rays.
- Exposure to heat can also cause micro-circulation that can contribute to hives and itchy or red skin
- No sexual activities: For clients receiving Brazilian services or bikini sugaring, as we don’t want any foreign bacteria in the area.

You can sugar almost anywhere on the body. These areas include brows, lips, face, underarms, legs, bikini, and Brazilian!
