Pre and Post Treatment Care For ‘Tox And Fillers

As a prescriptive skincare clinic, our client centric approach doesn’t stop at our service and product recommendations. Our clinicians, nurses and skincare team all want your experience before, during and after treatments to be the best one yet. While we offer some of the most innovative treatments in the industry, there are a few things that you should prepare for pre and post- treatment.

With any treatment, the precautions and post care treatment recommendations vary depending on the service, product and area treated. This blog is intended to give you a very general overview of the pre and post treatment actions you can take to make the most of your experience with neurotoxins, fillers or any other cosmetics treatments you receive. Specific pre and post treatment recommendations will be provided by your cosmetic injectionist or skincare team member upon booking with KLS Aesthetics.

Neurotoxins

Injectable neurotoxins work to relax muscles in the face to reduce the appearance of crow’s feet, frown lines, and other lines and wrinkles.

Pre Treatment Care

You can reduce your chances of bruising by skipping alcohol, oily vitamins, and anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen, for 72 hours before your appointment. You might also consider taking Arnica tablets for three days before your appointment, which can also help with inflammation and wound healing, especially if you’re prone to bruising.

Post Treatment Care

While toxin injections are a fairly quick and straightforward procedure, you’ll get the best out come when following these post treatment gaudiness:

  • Sit up straight for the first five or six hours after treatment
  • Skip the gym for at least 24 hours
  • Avoid massaging the injection site for 24 hours
  • Avoid tightly fitted hats for six hours post-treatment
  • Be gentle if you plan to apply makeup
  • Skip products that might irritate the skin until the next day – these include anything with sulfates, petroleum, fragrance, lactic acid, or other irritants
  • Don’t panic if you can’t drink through a straw, have trouble enunciating certain words, or you can’t whistle in the two weeks after an upper lip treatment
  • Watch for signs of infection. Contact the clinic who performed your cosmetic injections if you experience redness or tenderness that doesn’t go away within a few days or if you develop a fever after infection
  • Tylenol may be used for any discomfort. Check with your primary care physician before starting or stopping any medications
  • Wait 14 days before any cosmetic tattoo, waxing, facials, chemical peels, microneedling and dental work. If you have any procedure that you believe may affect your neurotoxin result, please reach out to a KLS Aesthetics specialists with any questions. We are happy to help!

Things You Should Know

No toxin takes full effect immediately, and you might not see full results for up to 14 days. That’s why we recommend a follow-up visit two weeks after your injection. This gives us an opportunity to make sure that you’ve received your desired result and gives you a chance to add more units to your treatment if needed. Something else to keep in mind is that neurotoxins aren’t permanent. The time in between depends on how your body metabolizes the neurotoxin. Fortunately, regular injections at the recommended dosage help you achieve longer lasting results. Plan on visiting your cosmetic injectionist about 3-4 times a year. If you are metabolizing your neurotoxins faster than you would like, Daxxify could be an option for you.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers work to plump the skin to create a fuller and more youthful appearance. They can help to combat the natural fat and collagen loss in the face.

Pre Treatment Care

Like neurotoxins, dermal fillers can cause bruising, swelling and sensitivity at the injection site. You can reduce your chance of bruising by avoiding alcohol, oily vitamins and anti-inflammatory medications 72 hours before your appointment. If you currently take anticoagulation medications, such as Warfarin, you’ll need to get the okay from your primary healthcare provider before you get cosmetic fillers. If you have dental work scheduled, please do so 2 weeks prior or 2 weeks after any filler procedure.

If you tend to get cold sores and take prescription medication, make sure you take as prescribed for 2 days before your treatment. Injections can trigger the virus in some individuals, so taking your medication may help prevent this as an unpleasant side effect. Taking cold sore medication for 3 days after treatment is also encouraged.

Post Treatment Care

Like neurotoxin injections, dermal fillers are a simple, in-office procedure. Things you can do to increase your chances of a smooth recovery and best results include:

  • Don’t touch or apply pressure to the treated area for six hours; you can then wash your face gently unless instructed otherwise
  • Skip facial treatments, such as scrubs and exfoliators, for about 72 hours
  • Wait to schedule any upcoming microneedling, microdermabrasion, or chemical peel sessions for two weeks after receiving dermal fillers
  • Watch your sun exposure for two weeks – wear sunscreen and a hat and avoid tanning beds
  • Don’t massage the area unless your provider says otherwise
  • Watch for signs of infection – although rare, tell your provider if you experience redness or tenderness at the site of injection, significant pain or discomfort, notice any type of discharge, or develop a fever
  • Do not smoke, vape or use straws for 2 weeks after lip filler to avoid moving the filler
  • Tylenol may be used for any discomfort. Check with your primary care physician before starting or stopping any medications
  • You will need to wait 2 weeks to see the final result as you may have swelling, bruising and lumpiness.  It takes 2 weeks for any filler to fully integrate into the tissue.

Things You Should Know

Side effects of either treatment are rare, but there’s always an inherent risk of minor bruising. We recommend that you schedule your appointment more than two weeks ahead of any important event! The last thing you want is even minor bruising or swelling on your wedding day!
